Photo Announcement. Huawei MatePad Paper - more like a reader than a tablet

Huawei today announced a device called Huawei MatePad Paper. Formally, the newcomer is classified as a tablet, but in fact, rather, it is a reader, an e-book.

The screen is classic ink. Diagonal 10.3", resolution 1404x1872 (227 ppi), there is a backlight. Exactly the same screens are used by other manufacturers of readers. From the latter one can recall, for example, Onyx Boox Note Air 2.

There is support for native second-generation Huawei M-Pencil styluses (the stylus comes with the reader).

As you might guess, sharpened Huawei MatePad Paper, first of all, for reading and for taking notes (and therefore the stylus). Plus, you can listen to something - there are even speakers. But in order to watch a video or play something, of course, there will be problems. E-Ink screens are not suitable for such things. Huawei, of course, claims that they have a clever Smart Refresh technology... But no, it's still not for that.

It's not very clear what happened to the hardware. We are talking about a six-core chipset. And there are very few of them on the market. I would say there are almost none. With a good degree of probability, the elimination method canabout to assume that this is HiSilicon Kirin 820E. Rare chip. It is used, in particular, in the smartphone Huawei nova 8 Russia. In AnTuTu, if it were a real tablet, one would expect around 400 thousand points.

Memory is not very much by the standards of tablets and a lot by the standards of readers. 4 GB RAM and 64 GB storage.

The same story with the battery. By the standards of tablets, 3625 mAh is quite a bit, but by the standards of readers - a very fair amount.

There is no mobile internet support. But there is a sixth Wi-Fi. More precisely, it is designated as Wi-Fi 6+. Thuabout such a "plus" and how it differs from the usual six, I find it difficult to say.

There is a fingerprint scanner. Combined with the power button.

The device runs on HarmonyOS. So it is quite possible to install additional software from the app store.

And about money. I did not find official information about prices. But the news on quite respectable sites says about €499 (₽46,700, $559) for Europe.

03/20/2022 Supplement

The device went on sale in China. And on the local official website, the specifications are a little more detailed. The chipset is indeed Kirin 820E. Plus, there will be not one variety on sale, as in Europe, but two, differing in memory capacity.

Prices in China will be ¥2,999 (₽39,700, $475) and ¥3,699 (₽48,900, $586) for the 4+64GB and 6+128GB versions, respectively.
