Announcement. Microsoft Surface Pro 9 and Surface Pro 9 with 5G - wintel hybrid and its brother on ARM chipset
Microsoft announced yesterday its next hybrid (Windows tablet with a plug-in keyboard). More precisely, two hybrids. Surface Pro 9 and Surface Pro 9 with 5G.
The first is a classic wintel device and no mobile internet support at all. The second is with an ARM chipset and support for 5G networks.
Yes. Here we have the debut of the Microsoft SQ 3 ARM chipset. The chip is made by Qualcomm. Its characteristics, however, are not yet clear. Well, it’s probably powerful, since it’s put into such rather fancy devices.
In the wintel version, the chipsets are traditional. Fresh, highlydriving. There are four to choose from. True, the last two are exclusive for "corporate clients".
Memory. Surface Pro 9 is equipped with fast LPDDR5 RAM (8, 16 or 32 GB, it cannot be upgraded or replaced). In Surface Pro 9 5G, the memory is slower, LPDDR4x (8 or 16 GB).
Removable memory from 128 GB to 1 TB for the first tablet, from 128 to 512 GB for the second.
The screens have been improved for sure, but the main features are the same as last year's Surface Pro 8. Diagonal 13" (503 cm²), resolution 2880x1920 (266 ppi), dynamic refresh rate up to 120 Hz. Of course, touch screens, plus there is support for the stylus. Why would you want a Surface Pro without a stylus and a clip-on keyboard, right?
The batteries for the tablets are the same, 47.70 Wh. At the same time, the declared operating time with "typical use" is 15.5 hours for a device on Intel and 19 hours for a tablet on an ARM chip.
Cameras. Rear resolution 10 MP. Front - "1080p". Two megapixels, right? Not seriously. Plus there's a separate front-facing Windows Hello IR camera for face recognition.�my.
Both tablets support Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.1.
In Surface Pro 9 with 5G, you can insert a SIM card (either physical or eSIM) and enjoy 5G internet. Plus, he (and only he) has a full-fledged GPS module. So if anything - do not get lost in the forest.
Different connectors. USB-C 3.2 on the ARM version and more sophisticated USB-C 4.0/Thunderbolt 4 on Intel - you can connect a 4K monitor, for example. That's right. Thunderbolt is an Intel technology. Although, I suspect buyers of Surface Pro 9 with 5G will be offended.
About money. The Surface Pro 9 starts at $999.99 for the 8+128GB Core-i5 version. Surface Pro 9 with 5G for the same 8+128 GB it will cost $1299.99 (₽82900).
An interesting observation. With the same amount of memory, Surface Pro 9 5G is exactly the same as Surface Pro 9 on Core-i7.
