Great Barrier Reef areas show highest coral cover seen in 36 years

Two-thirds of the Great Barrier Reef in Australia recorded the highest quantity of coral cover in almost 4 many years, although the reef remains to be susceptible to local weather change and mass bleaching, a monitoring group stated Thursday.

The northern and central components of the UNESCO world heritage-listed reef have skilled some restoration whereas the southern area has seen a lack of coral cover as a result of crown-of-thorns starfish outbreaks, based on a report by the Australian Institute of Marine Science, a authorities company.

AIMS CEO Paul Hardisty stated that whereas the coral in the north and central areas was an indication the reef may get well from disturbances, the lack of coral in the southern area demonstrated how the reef remains to be susceptible to "continued acute and severe disturbances that are occurring more often and are longer-lasting."

The Great Barrier Reef has suffered from widespread and extreme bleaching due to rising ocean temperatures. The reef was hit particularly laborious in 2016 and 2017 by underwater warmth waves that prompted bleaching occasions. "Every summer the Reef is at risk of temperature stress, bleaching and potentially mortality and our understanding of how the ecosystem responds to that is still developing," Hardisty stated in a media launch.

"The 2020 and 2022 bleaching events, while extensive, didn't reach the intensity of the 2016 and 2017 events and, as a result, we have seen less mortality," Hardisty stated. "These latest results demonstrate the Reef can still recover in periods free of intense disturbances."

The report comes after UNESCO final yr proposed including the Great Barrier Reef to a listing of world heritage websites which can be in hazard. A gathering to debate the way forward for the reef was imagined to be held in Russia in June however was canceled after the invasion of Ukraine.

On the central and northern areas, laborious coral cover reached 33% and 36% this yr, respectively, the highest degree recorded in the previous 36 years of monitoring, the report stated.
