53 more Corona deaths in Berlin

This means that 899 deaths have been recorded since the spring. According to the report, the number of reported new infections in the capital is slightly lower at 1129 than on Tuesday of the previous week (1348).

Intensive care bed occupancy rises to 28%

The Corona traffic light remains unchanged at red for two indicators. At 200.6, the number of cases per 100,000 inhabitants in the past seven days is still well above the warning level of 30, and the occupancy rate of intensive care beds with Covid 19 patients has risen to 28%. Only the reproduction rate remains green: it is at 0.94. Significantly lower values would be needed to slow down the pandemic. A total of 80,935 infections with Sars-CoV-2 have been recorded in Berlin since the beginning of the pandemic, of which 60,920 are considered recovered.

Case numbers highest among old people

The President of the Robert Koch Institute (RKI), Lothar Wieler, explained the increase in the number of deaths in Germany on Tuesday in Berlin with the age of those infected. Currently, the number of cases is highest among old and very old people. In Berlin, for example, there have been around 834 cases per 100,000 inhabitants in the over-90s group in the past seven days, and just under 300 in the 80-89 age group. There have been major outbreaks in several old people's and nursing homes.

Tougher Corona measures nationwide

According to Wieler, in order to protect these groups as well, it is important to reduce the number of infections in general: "If we get the numbers down overall in Germany, then infections will not be passed on so quickly. That is the crucial point. From Wednesday onwards, stricter Corona measures will apply nationwide. However, these can only be reflected in the reported figures with a time lag.
