Turkish Prosecutor’s Office Demands Arrest of One of Montreux Convention Letter Admirals

ANKARA (Sputnik) – The Turkish prosecutor’s workplace has demanded the arrest of one of the retired admirals who signed the letter in protection of the Montreux conference, and is asking for 9 extra admirals to be topic to accommodate arrest, a lawyer representing the pursuits of these detained instructed Sputnik.

“The prosecutor’s office demanded the arrest of one of the retired admirals – Ergun Mengi. For nine more people who signed the letter it has demanded house arrest, and for four others to be released on a signature bond. The decision on the measure of restraint will be made by the court,” lawyer Celal Ulgen stated.

According to media experiences, 10 of the retired admirals had been detained the day after the letter was printed.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has condemned the letter saying that the navy has no proper to intervene in politics. Erdogan has, nonetheless, reaffirmed Turkey’s dedication to the conference. According to the Turkish president, the development of the Istanbul Canal “will eliminate the threat of an environmental and man-made catastrophe on the Bosphorus.”  

Istanbul’s Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu is towards the venture and requires holding a referendum relating to the difficulty.
